All about Santorinian wine
From the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. The cultivation of the vine was for the island the main source of income, and the wines were in demand all over the world. In the excavations of Akrotiri, vases and amphorae were found that bear witness to the trade of Santorini wine from that time.
The vineyards of Santorini are among the oldest vineyards in Greece, and among the rarest European vineyards with autoriza vines. The soil and climatic conditions caused the arrival of the phylloxera insect that destroyed most of the aspen trees in Europe.
The volcanic soil of Santorini due to its composition consisting of theraic earth and siliceous sand has a high water capacity and absorbs the moisture of the night nourishing the fruits.
Because of the winds, vine-growers, for thousands of years, practiced a method of pruning by twisting the vine around to form a round basket in which the bunches grew, thus protecting them from the north winds and the clouds of dust and sand, and they enjoy the cool microclimate of the summer season.
